Explosive canisters, also known as propane gas tanks or red canisters, are carriable objects that are placed around the arena grounds. Contestants can trigger them to release a propellant gas, causing it to fly forwards after which it explodes, dealing high damage to structures.
Overview
Like any canister, explosive canisters are placed at random locations picked from a large set of fixed canister locations specific to the arena. It is possible for no canisters to be present in a round. They can also be obtained from balloons. Contestants can pick up the canister and carry it around the arena.
The canister will open when:
- it is picked up and thrown by a contestant, or;
- the cylinder is sufficiently damaged, or;
- the valve, specifically, is destroyed.
Once opened, the canister releases a propellant gas causing it to fly forwards in a straight line. If the canister directly hits a contestant in this state, it deals contact damage. Any sticky gadgets that are attached to the explosive canister will weigh it down, causing it to travel at a slower speed and be affected by gravity.
Following this, the canister will explode when:
- the windup time passes, or;
- it flies into a surface (or contestant) at a high enough velocity, or;
- the cylinder is destroyed (e.g. from a C4 explosion).
The explosion deals damage to nearby contestants based on proximity and destroys nearby structures.
Strategy
- When used as a weapon, the explosive canister can reach opponents at a much greater distance than any other canister.
- Attaching explosive sticky gadgets to the canister can turn it into a dangerous weapon, but this will greatly lower the speed and distance at which the canister can reliably reach the opponent.
- Specifically, attaching two C4s turns the explosive canister into a short- to medium-ranged bomb that can be detonated at the optimal point in its trajectory. It deals enough damage to instantly kill multiple contestants of any build in a generous area. This strategy is nicknamed by the community as the "nuke".
- Mines can also be attached to deal further damage or add additional effects to the nuke i.e. fire or gas.
- A "snuke" (super nuke) is a nuke that has at least 6 but up to 18 explosives placed on it. This usually occurs in a team of three Heavy Builds, with access to large amounts of explosives.
- An "atomic punch" is a variation of the nuke that is not thrown. By picking up a normal nuke using an explosive canister and hitting it with a quick melee attack, the nuke automatically detonates. This variation of the nuke is more reliable as it bypasses the out-of-control spinning of a regular nuke, but also damages the user upon use, making it a high-risk high-reward tactic.
- The explosive canister can be picked up after releasing it to wait out some of its windup time. Releasing it with a shorter fuse makes it easier to destroy a specific piece of a structure (such as the suspension hooks of a floating platform) to prevent it from bouncing off the target surface.
