Smoke is an effect that can appear in the arena. It obscures vision and enemy player outlines, making it difficult to target or observe enemies both through & within a smoke cloud.
Sources
- A Smoke Grenade releases smoke upon the second impact with the ground or other surface, and can be moved by explosions & only destroyed with extreme explosive damage.
- A Powder Canister will release smoke upon implosion which does not move and cannot be removed by explosive damage.
- Crumbling buildings can create a smaller but still effective smoke cloud.
Mechanics
Smoke makes it harder to look past the cloud. Any contestant inside the smoke cloud will have a visual filter applied that greatly reduces their vision depending on how deep within the smoke cloud they are.
Additionally, outlines of enemy contestants will be hidden either when a contestant has the smoke visual filter applied or when the enemy contestant is the one inside the smoke. However, a sonar grenade will be able to detect opponents through smoke.
A smoke cloud will not expand, shrink, move with objects or react to gravity if created by a Powder Canister. If created by a Smoke Grenade, the smoke will follow the location of the grenade (such as if it were to fall through a dematerialized surface or be launched by an exploding Gas Canister ).
Smoke can counter fire by immediately extinguishing it. While smoke does not have any effect on the primary attack of Flamethrower, it can stop the after-burn effect.
Properties
Smoke
Usable by Opponents — Can be used by opponents to their advantage.
Visibility — Affects the line of sight of the user and/or opponents. The smoke cloud blocks vision.
Not Attached — Does not attach to a surface upon deployment. Smoke from a Powder Canister will remain stationary, and smoke from a Smoke Grenade will move with the grenade's location.
Strategy
- Smoke canisters and grenades can be used to hide contestants from enemy sightlines.
- Hiding in smoke while defending a cashout can help kill stealing enemies without being spotted.
- Thermal Vision can be used to see inside and through the smoke cloud, making it a powerful combination for ambushing enemies. Players seen through the smoke aren't highlighted.
